過去,佛陀在摩竭提國善勝精舍的菩提樹下,以威德神力降伏前來破壞修行的魔軍後,於座上思惟:「我應當遍灑甘露,讓佛法真理弘揚於三千大千世界。在過去的這幾年裡,父王所派遣的五位大臣一直隨侍照料我,供養芝麻、稻米等生活所需,今日能夠成道,他們功不可沒,我應當去度化他們。」於是,佛陀從樹下起身,向波羅奈國出發。
相好莊嚴、具足威儀的佛陀,光照天地,神威震人,凡是看到佛陀的人,都會生起無比的歡喜心。一天,佛陀於途中遇到一位辭親離家、尋師學道的梵志,名為「憂呼」。憂呼一見到佛陀的相好莊嚴,驚喜交集,無限欽慕,於是退至路旁,衷心讚歎:「聖者,您的威德氣度是多麼攝受人心!您的儀表行止是多麼殊特安詳!您是跟隨哪一位大師修行學道,才能成就如此殊勝的相貌呀?」佛陀聽了憂呼的讚歎後,慈悲地為憂呼開示:
「八正覺自得,無離無所染,愛盡破欲網,
自然無師受,我行無師保,志獨無伴侶,
積一得作佛,從是通聖道。」
憂呼聽了還是惘然不解,於是詢問佛陀將往何去?佛陀告訴梵志:「我現在正要前往波羅奈國,擊大法鼓,轉無上法輪。三界之內的聖賢,從來沒有像我這樣的傳道人,為眾生傳授解脫生死的法門,令眾生親證寂靜涅槃。」憂呼聽到佛陀的回答,高興地說:「太好了!太好了!希望能早日聽到您所說的無上大法。」便向佛作揖告別,準備前往波羅奈國聆聽佛陀開示法要。尚未抵達目的地,憂呼卻因病在露宿的路邊往生了。
佛陀以道眼了知憂呼志未竟而身先死,哀愍他因無知而錯失得度因緣,嘆息地說:「世人愚癡,不知無常,總以為人生百歲,時光常在。遇到了佛,卻甘心捨離而投向死亡;聽到了法鼓雷震,卻如癡如聾、恍若未聞;佛法甘露能滅除生死之苦,卻不知要及時聽聞受持。所以始終於六道中輪迴,生生死死,歷劫無窮,不知何時才能得度?」佛陀發大慈憫,又說偈言:
「見諦淨無穢,已度五道淵,佛出照世間,
為除眾憂苦。得生人道難,生壽亦難得,
世間有佛難,佛法難得聞。」
佛說此偈時,空中五百位天人聞偈有省,清淨法喜,皆證得須陀洹果。
